The Velvet Undergound es una banda de rock formada en Nueva York en la década del 60. Aunque nunca alcanzara el éxito comercial, es una de las bandas de rock más influyentes de la historia y tiene un intenso culto, aún a pesar de haber durado pocos años. Fue una de las primeras bandas en experimentar con la forma e incluir influencias avant-garde y, especialmente, el ruido de guitarras que los hizo definir el uso del noise dentro del rock. Su influencia sobre el punk, la incluye dentro del grupo de bandas clasificadas como proto-punk y, posiblemente, como la primera de ellas.
